Trace elements in contrast to bulk elements are available in the body in concentrations lower than 50 mg per kg of body weight. Trace elements include, for example, Copper, Chromium, Manganese and Selenium, but also Iron, Iodine and Zinc.
The function of trace elements can be either universal, as in the case of Iron or Zinc, for example, or specific, as with Molybdenum or Chromium.
Many different foods contain trace elements, but despite their low concentration in the body, deficiencies can have considerable negative effects on health. An adequate intake of all trace elements is therefore essential for a completely healthy and sustainable way of life.
